Formula D, the game
Formula D transports you into the turbulent world of Formula 1: Don’t lose control of the engine in the last bottleneck, master the chicane, stick to your opponent’s back wheels, take advantage of the slipstream and then coolly overtake him … A Formula 1 pilot has to be willing to take risks and be able to plan ahead – at least if you want to get to the very top of the winners’ podium.
Formula D also means the suspense of illegal racing on the streets of the big cities. Anything goes: customized cars, nitro fuel injection, skidding in roundabouts, unfair tricks … The game principles always stay the same, but different cars, rules and circuits come into play.
This new edition of Formula D contains material which has not yet been published, including painted cars, dashboards, driver profiles, circuits … And simple playing instructions are enclosed, allowing you to start play immediately. Off you go!

As a retailer the first thing I’m going to be asked is will the tracks from older versions be compatible? The second question will be wanting to know if extra tracks (or reprints of the old ones, if they are fully compatible) will be made available, and on what sort of timescale?
Many thanks for your reply - I’m personally looking forward to the new version. See you in Essen!
Yes, the tracks from older versions will be totally compatible. Extra tracks will be made available, more details about them soon !
The game looks great. I saw the box packaging at GenCon and a few of the inside elements. It is awesome that the old tracks will work. This is No. 1 on my gaming want list beginning in November.
My only regret is that there is a special car being packaged only in the European versions of the game. Hardly seems fair to us U.S. fans.
I remember back a year or so ago when Formula De was said it would be reprinted one more time and then never again. My retailer bought a bunch of them, thinking it wouldn’t ever be available in any shape or form. Now, he heard about this reprint, and is quite annoyed at what he considers a lie to the retailers, since a reprint has happened even though it has changes it is in essence the same game. So, for him I have to ask: How come the deceiving “last reprint ever” was mentioned with odds are this version in the works at the very same time? Even if it wasn’t in the works, it was designed using the same system that was “never to be published again”. So, whats up with that?
Hi,
I think its a great additional to the game series, to include street curcuits. I have all the original circuits and look forward to you hopefully releasing new circuits for this edition.
One question though, I have noticed to types of cars on some preliminary photos. Will both sets of cars be available in the set?
Neil.
when this site in italian languege ….. in italy there are many fans of formula dè interesting on a new games ….
Are the tracks going to be updated (Hockenheim changed a lot since it was printed for FD).
Also, notice to publisher: I worked out a great NASCAR D conversion, playtested and very simple to learn. Including stock car racing rules and tracks could be a great way to make more profits from that game.
The two types of cars (the regular formula one and the muscle cars) will be available in the box.
About the special edition car, it will be available on first come basis worldwide.
There will be an italian version of this website, soon… Maybe monday, just have to wait for a small time. There will also be the italian Formula D rules on download.
How often will additional circuits be produced?
I preordered the game with Thought Hammer after discovering this well-received and popular game at Boardgame geek (BGG). I hope I’m lucky enough to get one of the first 10,000 games for the bonus car!

Cheers!
No response to my question? Anyone have thoughts on this? My FLGS feels scammed at buying the older version since they read it was the only printing of it ever to be made again. Seems like they are right to be mad. This is clearly the same game, and as such should not have been created according to statements in the past of “last ever printing”. Changing the name and a few things here and there do not change this game from the older version enough to be “a new design”. They would like (and I would like to hear) a response to this question or an apology from whomever for making such a statement when it was clearly untrue.
It’s like the Rolling Stones, they use to say they won’t come back on stage… nobody is perfect!
Isn’t it really irrelevant that theres a new one. Hasn’t the retailler made his money from buying in the old stock?
Have you not had fun with the one you possibly bought?
I for one bought another set when I found out it was possibly never going to see a reprint.
I personally applaud them for making a new version and giving us new circuits.
Any idea on a release date in the US?
“November” says the Asmodee web site.
http://www.asmodee-us.com/games/strategy/formula-d.php
Are you going to release more tracks than those included in the box? When? How much? ;o)
When are new trcks going to be available?? We want lots of new tracks??
Ye! New tracks! We want new tracks!
Any idea of a release date yet guys?
Seems like there hasn’t been any updates in a while and they aren’t answering questions? Wondering if this is delayed??
Street Release date is fixed : late november !
Awesome, do we know when the tracks will be out also?
Will any additional car sets be available like the pewter minis (plastic is ok too) from a few years ago? I’d love to have a variety of car types for different types of races.
I want to run the new Formula D at a Houston, TX convention in February. Is the late November release date VERY sure? They’ve been bugging me to submit my games and I’ve been stalling to get a look at the new game so I know how I will run it and what my description will be.
Hi everyone, We just received this morning our contener of Formula D. The game sould be available in one week in your favorite store.
Thanks. I just let the gal at Fun Again Games know. I’ve had a pre-order in with them for months and I’m hoping to get some of the limited release cars. Another notice just got sent out on game submissions for the convention, so I’ll stall them a little while longer.
HI,
Released Tuesday 11th November in UK. See http://www.dicebay.co.uk/formula-d-1350-p.asp
Awesome! I hope we see it stateside very soon!

For the guy who was asking about being jipped by this new edition…
Wasn’t that made by a DIFFERENT GAME COMPANY? Who said THEY weren’t going to make it any more???
We should be thankful that Asmodee is reprinting it so those of us who don’t have it can get a copy without having to buy it at 10 times the cost from some greedy retailer who probably (and purposefully) intended to hold on to them just to ream his/her poor customers for a huge profit.
I have bought many games that “were out of print” and paid many times it was worth just to get it. And in many cases, those games were reprinted afterwards. SO it is MY OWN DARN fault for paying that much. DOn’t blame your problems on other people.
Mine arrived yesterday and let me say I am very impressed. I have the original and can see myself trying to off load it soon. This version is much nicer in terms of the bits and the new boards. The city race side of the board and the new rules for Drivers and the City board are great and will make me play this alot more then the older version.
I was lucky enough to get the Limited Edition Porsche also. I recommend this to anyone looking for a great racing game. Don’t waste money on the original Formula De. Pick this edition up.
But is you must have the original I will be offloading mine on Board Game Geek
I am really impressed with this new version and my Nephew LOVES it! Will there be new Street tracks out?
I really love the street racing element to the game.
I’m with “Inak”. I’d love to get some new pewter/plastic minis. The old ones are hard to come by.
I also got my new copy of Formula D and my group really loves the new layout.
I will say that I am a little disappointed in the plastics used for the trays as I do not feel that they will hold up to the wear and tear that the game will go through after running a season. I can see the plastic trays cracking and splitting very easily. Even though the box that I got was in perfect condition the plastic liner in the box was beat up pretty good for a new game. This may be my only disappointment.
I do wish that there was also some thought into locking the boards together when putting the track together. I know that there are many tile games out there that have interlocking pieces to hold them together. This would have been nice to add to this new board so that the pieces would not keep moving around during a race.
The heavy stock cardboard for the dashboard should hold up nicely so no problems there.
I also like that you got rid of fuel and added in the gearbox. It was hard to get people to believe that you had to spend wrenches in the pit to increase your fuel when fuel and tires should be free. Now there are no complaints.
I do love the new look and feel of the game and thanks for doing the reprint. This has been and still is one of my all time favorite board games. Just keep on printing new tracks that I can add to my collection and I will keep buying them.
Just for those wondering why the game store owner was upset. He was apparently told by someone in distribution that Formula De was going out of print and would not be reprinted. Based on that he bought many copies for his store.
Just after that Formula D is announced, and while it is not technically a reprint of “Formula De”, it is in fact a new release of the original game (specifically an improved version that is also fully backwards compatible.) Because of this, no one will want to buy the old version, and so the store is stuck with them.
Note this is not a complaint against Asmodee, and I love the new edition, but somebody did mislead the game store owner, and he will lose money because of it.
its nice game
Well picked this up this afternoon for plans for a tournament this weekend. Unfortunatley I now have to cancel the tourny as two of the Cards were cut backwards. Which means I am out 4 players and 4 Shifter boxes. The game looked cool but for $70 I am very disapointed at the quality control.
Email Asmodee and they can get replacements mailed out.
Hello!! I wonder one thing? When do you realese more tracks??? Soon I hope.. Thanks for the new Formula D, it´s naic!!!
…nice…LoL
Unfotunately I have emailed them no less then three times now and so far have received no responce. My FLGS is refusing to take the game back as well saying that it’s Asmodee’s responsiblity to fix the error. I’ve got a huge case of Buyer’s regret now.
Well shoot. Did a bit of googling and I’ve come across a couple numbers supposedly associated with the company:
(206) 604-8365 went to what sounds like a cellphone voicemail prompt — This area code is Seattle, WA
(518) 561-1700 gave me fax/modem tones (though it was 8pm east coast time) — This area code is Albany, NY
(514) 504-8461 is in Quebec and I don’t have international minutes to test this one.
In the meantime, I was poking around boardgamegeek.com about this game and I think there are some fan-made dashboards for “Formula De” that could work in a pinch.
An update: Asmodee finally did contact me. Seems everyone was on vacation. I have been told it will be taken care of on Monday due to the weekend.
Bad timing on my part it seems.
Played a two-lap F1 race on Race City (the street track), with my inlaws using a mixture of rules. We use the beginner dashboards with the advanced rules, and a single house rule. The house rule is if a player’s roll comes up one square short of the corner, they can “slip” the clutch and use a single WP to advance 1 square into the corner. The rule keeps everyone closer together.
Anyway Stig’s brother-in-law has a knack for making some solid rolls, and when he gets out front his lead can be nearly insurmountable unless the other players burn WP to keep up or he gets cocky and wrecks himself. Well The Stig wasn’t going to spend yet another race sucking exhaust fumes in second place so he went for it. Stig tried to push his luck towards the end of the first lap with the expectation that he’d have enough WP in reserve to skip the pits. Poor rolls deemed that idea a farce so he overshot the last two turns to make up as much distance as possible before hitting the pits.
Stig made some excellent rolls and tactical decisions along the first three turns, and coming out of the third turn was setup for a simply monster all-or-nothing gamble for the lead. Stig shoved the car into 6th gear and roared down the long back straight into Exurb, taking the “millionaire’s shift” down into third gear, skidding through the turn — burning copious WP — while his brother-in-law played it safe. Coming out of Exurb, The Stig was ahead by a nose, but was down to five WP. He had no choice but to keep going for broke, as conservation would cause him to give up his lead before they hit Police HQ. This wasn’t a problem because.. some say he was a failed government experiment that escaped with the project manager’s Ferrari Enzo… all we know is, he’s called the Stig.
Stig pulls away in the lead, but second place gives hot pursuit, chewing up their own WP to keep close. Coming into the final turn Stig is down to a single WP, but has to keep it in 5th gear with a roll of 14 or less to have a chance. The dice rolls and comes up 15, one square overshot. In a wall of oily tire smoke, The Stig spins out. His attempt to get back up to speed drops him to fourth place as he crosses the finish line.
The dice, she is a harsh mistress.
A group of us play boardgames on a regular basis and 3 of us have started playing a Formula De championship. We have most of the original tracks and are looking for 2 other players to join the championship (we drive two cars each). If you live in or around Bedford UK and can be available on a reasonably regular basis please get in touch. Just in case any of you are ageist - we are a group of middle aged guys who still think they are in their 20’s
Hello,
I purchased a copy of the older game the other day, unaware that there was a reprint. I played with my wife and daughter. The wife unit kicked our butts. I attribute it to her being an Indy race fan.
Anyhow, are there any significant difference between the older Formula De and Asmodee’s version, besides street tracks?
Also, the insert sheet in the older game mentions pewter formula racing cars were available. Also extra sets of dice. Any ideas if they still are?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
As far as I’ve seen there is no real rule difference from FDe to FD. No idea about the dice or cars.
The biggest difference is for the street racing stuff. I played the ”normal” one since it got out and enjoy it very much. Actually i still run old maps with my new box, its completely compatible. Cars are the same, dice are the same. For pewter cars and extra dice sets, really dont know if they still available. Didn’t see any of these in years. You might have get an old box. But for the rules its only in street racing that you have a difference.

Asmodee is holding a design contest for the third Formula D expansion that will be released in November 2009. As with the recently announced Hockenheim/Valencia expansion that’s due out in July 2009, each Formula D expansion includes a professional racing circuit as well as a street racing circuit. One half of the third expansion has been locked in – the new F1 circuit in Singapore – but the street racing half will be determined by entries in a design competition. To enter, you must submit:
* The layout of your circuit, which must fit onto a 65cm x 98cm gameboard.
* Any special rules needed for your circuit; rules must be in English with a maximum length of 3,000 characters, including spaces.
Designs may be submitted from all parts of the world with an entry deadline of August 31, 2009. Eric Randall and Laurent Lavaur, co-designers of Formula D, will be part of the jury that determines the winner. Submit your entry by email to asmodee@asmodee.com with “Concours circuit Formula D” as the subject or mail it to the following address:

Hi Race Fans,
We have been running a little league and a question keeps coming up about corners. In the rules on page 5 under overshooting it states: “When coming out of a corner the car may not change lanes, but must stay in the same lane.”
Question: Does this rule regarding movement in a corner “that you must stay in the same lane” only apply in overshooting situations or does it also apply for normal movemetn out of a corner? We have been playing that you have to stay in the same lane that you came out of the corner.
Please let me know the correct interpretation of the rules.
Thanks it will help our season keep going.
The experienced players of previous editions indicated that it applied for normal exits as well. Slipstreaming was a partial exception to the rule. Im desperately trying to remember if you could avoid a crash that way or not - it would seem pointless to include such a rule if you could then take evasive action by simply moving out of the way rather than having to hit braking.
They called me back and I interviewed the next day and it went great! ,
I am so ready for Asmodee’s 3rd circuit pack…
Hurry up already!!!
Hey! Im getting worried…. Are there any more tracks coming up??
Please Admin give us some info..?!
BTW it´s lot more fun with the real stuff - skip the chicago-race style… Real Formula tracks please!!
Indeed why keep us in the dark for so long, We know what it’ll be and were hinted at an August release date (from an original November 2009 slot) so how about a sneak preview of parts of Singapore and the fans ciruit please.
I think it’s pretty safe to assume that this site has been abandoned. There has not been an official update since January of last year, no reference has been made to the 2nd expansion track which has been released, and all reference to the 3rd track has been removed from every FLGS I’ve visited.
Asmodee tried to reboot the series, and it would appear that they have failed. Unfortunate… (goes to hug his complete set of original tracks).
It is remarkable, very amusing opinion
Has casually found today this forum and it was registered to participate in discussion of this question.
Certainly. So happens. Let’s discuss this question. Here or in PM.
What remarkable words
On your place I would address for the help to a moderator.
Just purchased the latest version of Formula D. Already have my miniatures gaming group ready to try it out. The rules are as streamlined as before, but the visual display is a big improvement. Great game!
Robert,
I won’t give up!!!
I can’t imagine they would bail now.
The tracks can’t be that expensive to produce…and it’s probably a play-testing thing with the fan made circuit that’s holding things up mostly.
I don’t have any sales figures, but it seems to me that the game maintains a strong following and that the re-boot was successful enough to warrant a new track pack every 1-2 years, no?
There are so many circuits not yet made that some of the work is already done for the design team!
Abu Dhabi
The updated, soon to be revealed Silverstone
Istanbul
Streets of St. Petersburg
Infineon Raceway
Just to name a very few…that would be a welcome addition!
gostaria de saber onde comprar o jogo formula d (no brasil ou em fortaleza).aguardo uma resposta urgente.obrigado.
I couldn’t be certain where to buy in Brasil, but there are many online shops that would probably ship to you that still have Formula D in stock…
Here’s one:
